A unique publication in world bibliography on the artistic plundering of a European nation. Six volumes explain the looting, ravaging and clandestine sales that have led to the impoverishment of Spanish treasures between the 1808 War of Independence and modern times.

The work covers paintings, sculptures, codexes, books, silver and ivory objects, drawings, ceramics, crafts and luxury items that have all ended up abroad and gives an account of the ups and downs, robberies and vandalism that led to their loss. It details the clandestine smuggling that meant the enrichment of a host of museums and foreign collections, and explains also the eventful creation of national museums.
Similarly, the volumes refer to the devastation of archaeological sites, the collapse and destruction of monasteries and churches, attacks on city walls, palaces and unique buildings and how this has affected the dismantling of "historic quarters" and the hideous repercussions of property greed on urban layouts and the architectural legacy of the main cities in Spain.
The prologue and introduction to this work are by José M. Pita Andrade and Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez, both of whom are honorary directors of the Prado museum.
